![]() Fort Leavenworth an Army Base with a Family Oriented Mission Taking Child Abuse Prevention Month By Storm Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2009, found Don and Susan Rogers, National Trainers for S.A.F.E. Network, watching the sun rising from the windows of an American Airlines jet as they began what was to be a 4 day training marathon at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. As part of their April Child Abuse Prevention Month activities, Judy Poncavage, the Family Advocacy Program Manager had put into play the training of the elementary age kids, teenagers, parents and staff on personal protection safety education provided through S.A.F.E. Network. ![]() [Ft. Leavenworth Elementary Age Kids Workshop] Concepts such as home alone, internet, and dating safety, along with abduction, bully, relationship abuse, and sexual abuse prevention. The youth and parent workshops were filled with energy, a lot of interactive role-playing, fun oriented activities all designed to help them learn and retain the information they received. Ft. Leavenworth along with 55 other U.S. based Army, Air Force and Navy bases have been using various components of the Personal Protection Empowerment Program (PPEP), with many using all of the K-12 materials to promote a higher level of safety for the youth on their bases and in their communities. The workshops give the educational process a jump start to get families and kids excited about the learning process as-well-as giving the kids the tools they need to help protect themselves when they are away from the care and eyes of those who are responsible for them. The Director at the Youth Center on base said that she had never seen the kids so attentive and sit so still for that long and actually enjoy the presentation. Ft. Leavenworth is among a large number of military bases who provide a wide range of activities and information for their military families and the surrounding communities on an ongoing basis pertaining to the subject of child abuse prevention. Whether its the safety of our country, our allies or the American families, the U.S. military knows how to do it right. S.A.F.E.
